Yandex Images is a search engine’s image search that lets you start from a picture instead of a phrase. You give it a photo and it looks for pages that contain the same or a similar image. People use it to find the source of a picture, a larger version, or other pages that show the same thing.
This guide shows the four ways to start a search, what to expect from the results, and what to do when nothing useful comes back. The steps follow Yandex’s own help page. If your photo is saved on your device and you would rather use Google, see our guide to searching with a saved photo.
Open Yandex Images and click the camera icon in the search bar. You can then drag the image in, choose a file, paste an image from the clipboard, or type an image address. Results depend on what Yandex has indexed, so a poor result does not prove the picture is unique.
Four ways to start a search
| Method | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Drag and drop | The image is a file on your computer. Drag it from a folder onto the search area. |
| Select file | You prefer a file picker. Click Select file and browse to the image. |
| Paste from clipboard | You copied an image or a screenshot. Paste it into the search box. |
| Enter an image address | The image is already online. Copy its address and paste it into the search box. |
Prepare the image first
- Crop to the part you care about. A tight crop matches the subject instead of the background. The Image Cropper gives you free selection and common ratios.
- If the file is very large and slow to upload, shrink it a little with the Image Resizer. Keep enough detail that the subject is still clear.
What the results show
Yandex returns pages that contain the same or similar images, along with other sizes of the picture when they exist. Work through the results this way:
- Open a few of the pages that show the image large, with a caption or a date.
- Read the page to see where the photo was taken and who credits it.
- Compare the dates on several pages to see which appeared earlier.
- If you need a version for reuse, check the page’s own licence terms. A picture being findable does not mean it is free to use.
A matching thumbnail only tells you where to look. The answer comes from reading the page it links to, then checking a second source if the claim matters.
Why results can be poor
- The image may not be indexed. Yandex states that the result depends on whether the image is on the internet and has been indexed. A private or very new image can return nothing.
- The picture may have been edited. Heavy cropping, filters, mirroring or compression change what the engine can match.
- The crop may be too broad. If the photo has several subjects, search each one separately.
- One engine is one index. Try another provider and compare. Our Google guide covers the same steps there.
Privacy and responsible use
An uploaded image goes to the search provider, so read its privacy policy first and avoid uploading private documents, photos of children or pictures that show your address. If the photo came from your phone, it may include location data. Clear it first with the Image Metadata Editor. Do not use image search to find or track private individuals.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account to use Yandex Images?
The image search page can be opened without signing in. Terms and features can change, so check the current page.
Can it find the exact original photo?
Sometimes. If the original is indexed and unedited, it often appears. If not, you will see similar pictures instead.
What if I only have a screenshot?
Paste it into the search box, or save it and upload it. Crop out menus and borders first so the engine sees only the picture.
Is Yandex better than Google for this?
Neither is better in every case. They index different pages, so the useful habit is to try both and compare what each finds.
