What is website rank?

“Website rank” can mean two different things, and this page checks both:

  • Domain rank (popularity): where a whole website stands among all websites in the world, by how much it is used. A rank of #1 is the most popular site. This is what the old Alexa Rank showed.
  • Google position: where one of your pages appears in Google results for a particular keyword, for example position 3 for “emi calculator”. This is what SEO rank trackers show.

How the domain rank is worked out

The domain rank comes from the Tranco list, a free ranking built by academic researchers and widely used in internet research. It combines several public popularity sources, such as Cloudflare Radar, the Chrome User Experience Report, Cisco Umbrella and Majestic, and averages them over 30 days so that one busy day does not swing the result. Tranco publishes a new list every day, and this tool shows the latest rank plus the recent daily history.

RankWhat it means
Top 100Global giants, such as search engines, social networks and big stores
Top 10,000Large national brands, major news sites and popular apps
Top 100,000Well-known niche sites and established businesses
Top 1 millionSites with steady, regular traffic
Beyond 1 millionSmaller or newer sites. Still ranked, so you can track your growth
Not rankedToo little traffic data yet, or a new domain

A lower number is better. Ranks between small sites can move a lot from day to day, so look at the trend over weeks, not one day.

Is this an Alexa Rank alternative?

Yes. Amazon shut down Alexa.com and the Alexa Rank on 1 May 2022, and many old “Alexa rank checker” tools now show stale or made-up numbers. Tranco is free, updated daily and open about its method, which makes it a good replacement for comparing the popularity of websites.

How to check your keyword positions in Google for free

Google Search Console is the most accurate free source for your own site, because it uses Google’s real data rather than a single test search. Export the Performance report and upload it in the Google positions tab above. The report shows:

  • Quick wins: keywords at positions 4–20 with plenty of impressions. A small push could move them to the top of page one.
  • Low click-through rate: keywords where you already rank well but get fewer clicks than your own similar keywords. Better titles and descriptions usually help.
  • Questions people ask: searches that start with how, what, why or kaise. Each one is an idea for a section or FAQ.
  • Gains and losses: if you export with Compare turned on, you see which keywords moved up or down.

“Position” in Search Console is an average across all the searches where your page appeared. It can differ from what you see in one search, because results change by location, device and personal history.

How to improve your website rank

  1. Fix the basics. Make sure Google can crawl your site: check your robots.txt, sitemap and SSL certificate.
  2. Make pages fast. Test speed with the page load time tester and fix the slowest pages first.
  3. Work on quick wins. Improve pages for keywords at positions 4–20: answer the question better, add examples and FAQs, and link to the page from related pages.
  4. Write better titles. For keywords with a low click-through rate, rewrite the title and meta description. Check them with the meta tag analyzer.
  5. Keep links healthy. Find and fix broken links with the broken link checker and the redirect checker.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my website not ranked?

Tranco only ranks domains that show up in its traffic sources. New sites and sites with little traffic often have no rank yet. Keep growing your traffic and check again in a few weeks.

Why is the rank for my subdomain missing?

The ranking is mostly for main domains, such as example.com, not blog.example.com. The tool checks the main domain automatically when a subdomain has no rank.

Is a lower rank number better?

Yes. Rank #1 is the most popular website in the world. Going from #500,000 to #300,000 means your site got more popular.

Is this the same as my Google ranking?

No. Domain rank measures overall popularity. Google ranking is the position of a page for one keyword. Use the Google positions tab with your Search Console export to see that.

Do you upload my Search Console file?

No. The file is opened and analysed in your browser. Nothing is sent to our server.

Why does Search Console not show all my keywords?

The export includes up to 1,000 rows per table, and Google hides very rare searches for privacy. Totals in the report are for the rows in your file.

How often is the domain rank updated?

Tranco publishes a new list every day. The tool always fetches the latest data when you click Check rank.

About this tool. Domain ranks come live from the public Tranco API (tranco-list.eu), with attribution. The Search Console report runs entirely in your browser and uses only the numbers in your own export: quick wins and click-through gaps are measured against your own keywords, not against outside benchmarks. We tested it with plain CSV files, zipped exports, compare exports, empty files and sites without a rank.
