How Roman numerals work. Seven letters stand for numbers: I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1,000. Write the largest values first and add them up: XVI = 10 + 5 + 1 = 16. When a smaller symbol comes just before a larger one, subtract it: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400 and CM = 900.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the converter stop at 3,999?

The standard system allows a symbol to repeat at most three times, so MMM (3,000) is the largest thousands value. Bigger numbers were written with a bar over a letter to multiply it by 1,000, a style that is rarely used today.

Is there a Roman numeral for zero?

No. The Romans had no symbol for zero, and the converter starts at 1.

Is IIII correct for 4?

The standard form is IV. You will still see IIII on many clock faces. The converter reads IIII as 4 and tells you the standard form.

How do I write 2026 in Roman numerals?

MMXXVI. Two thousands (MM), two tens (XX) and six (VI).

Can I check a date for a tattoo or an invitation?

Yes. Use the Date to Roman tab, pick the order your country uses, and copy the result. Check the date twice before it is printed or inked.
