How PPF interest is calculated
PPF interest is worked out every month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of the month, and the total for the year is added to your account on 31 March. Interest is compounded once a year.
This is why the date of deposit matters. Money deposited on or before the 5th earns interest for that month; money deposited on the 6th or later starts earning only from the next month. A yearly deposit made by 5 April earns interest for all 12 months.
Example: you deposit ₹1,50,000 on 2 April. The balance is ₹1,50,000 in all 12 months, so the interest for the year is 1,50,000 × 7.1% = ₹10,650, credited on 31 March. Next year interest is worked out on the new balance of ₹1,60,650 plus that year’s deposit.

PPF rules (2026)
- Deposit: at least ₹500 and at most ₹1,50,000 in a financial year, in one go or in instalments (multiples of ₹50). Missing the minimum makes the account inactive until you pay a ₹50 penalty for each missed year.
- Lock-in: the account matures after 15 full financial years, counted from the end of the year in which you opened it.
- Extension: after maturity you can extend the account in blocks of 5 years, with or without fresh deposits. To keep depositing, submit the extension form within one year of maturity.
- Loan: from the 3rd to the 6th year, up to 25% of the balance at the end of the second year before the year you apply.
- Partial withdrawal: once a year from the 7th year, up to 50% of the lower of the balance at the end of the fourth year before, or the end of the previous year.
- Premature closure: allowed after 5 years for reasons such as serious illness or higher education, with interest reduced by 1%.
- One account per person. You can open it at any post office or authorised bank; the rate and rules are the same everywhere.
Tax benefits of PPF
PPF has EEE (exempt-exempt-exempt) status:
- Deposits up to ₹1,50,000 a year can be claimed as a deduction under the old tax regime (within the overall ₹1.5 lakh limit for such investments). The new regime does not allow this deduction.
- The interest credited every year is tax-free.
- The maturity amount is tax-free, under both regimes.
PPF in SBI, other banks and the post office
The PPF interest rate is fixed by the Government of India, not by the bank. An account with SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, any other authorised bank or India Post earns the same rate and follows the same rules, so this calculator works for all of them. You can also move your account from one bank or post office to another.

Frequently asked questions
What is the PPF interest rate now?
7.1% a year for October–December 2026. The Government reviews the rate every quarter; it has been 7.1% since April 2020.
What will ₹1.5 lakh a year in PPF give after 15 years?
At 7.1%, depositing ₹1,50,000 by 5 April every year for 15 years gives about ₹40,68,208. You deposit ₹22,50,000 and earn about ₹18,18,208 as tax-free interest.
Is it better to deposit monthly or once a year?
A single deposit by 5 April earns the most, because the whole amount earns interest for 12 months. Monthly deposits made by the 5th of each month earn a little less. For ₹1.5 lakh a year over 15 years the difference is about ₹1,23,608.
What happens to PPF after 15 years?
You can close the account and take the full amount, extend it for 5 years with fresh deposits, or leave it to continue without deposits. In the last case it keeps earning interest and you can withdraw once a year.
Can I calculate PPF for an account I already have?
Yes. Choose Existing account, enter your current balance and the full years already completed, and the calculator projects the rest of the term.
Is the SBI PPF calculator different from the post office one?
No. PPF rates and rules are the same at every bank and post office, so the result is the same.
Is PPF interest taxable?
No. PPF interest and the maturity amount are fully tax-free. Only the deduction on deposits depends on the tax regime you choose.
Rates and rules as of October 2026. Results are estimates; your passbook may differ by a few rupees because of rounding and the exact dates of your deposits.
