How to reverse search an image
- From your phone or computer: choose or drop the photo, press Copy image, open a search engine and paste it. You can also paste a screenshot straight onto this page with Ctrl+V.
- From a web page: copy the image address, switch to Image link, paste it, and click an engine. The search opens with your image already loaded.
- Try at least two engines. Each one has a different index, so results often differ.
Which search engine should I use?
| Goal | Try first |
|---|---|
| Identify a product, plant, animal or landmark | Google Lens |
| Find where an image was first posted | TinEye |
| Check whether a profile photo is copied from elsewhere | TinEye, then Google Lens |
| Find similar products to buy | Bing Visual Search |
| Find a bigger or sharper copy | TinEye or Google Lens |
Tips for better results
- Crop the image to the part you care about, such as one face or one product. Our Image Cropper does this in the browser.
- Remove borders, stickers and text added on top where you can.
- Use the largest, clearest copy you have. Very small or blurry images match poorly.
- A screenshot of a video frame works, but pause on a sharp frame first.
Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded to ToolsRiver?
No. The photo is read inside your browser to show a preview and to copy it. It only leaves your device when you paste or upload it into a search engine yourself, and that engine's own privacy policy then applies.
Why does the image link option not work for my photo?
Search engines must be able to open the link without logging in. Links from WhatsApp, Instagram stories, Google Photos or private cloud folders usually fail. Save the image and use the device option instead.
Copy image does nothing. What now?
Some browsers, especially on older phones, do not allow copying images. Open a search engine with the buttons and use its own camera or upload icon to pick the saved photo.
Can it find a person by their face?
Results depend on the search engine and on what is already public online. Google limits face matching for private people. Please use reverse search responsibly and respect people's privacy.
Does this work on mobile?
Yes. On a phone, the Google Lens and Bing buttons open their sites in your browser, where you can upload the photo from your gallery.
