Tons measure weight and square yards measure area, so the answer also depends on depth and material density. Enter both. The densities below are typical values and you can edit them.
Coverage of one ton at different depths
| Depth | Square yards per ton | Square feet per ton |
|---|
How to use the calculator
- Pick the material. The bulk density fills in and you can edit it.
- Enter the weight and choose US ton, metric tonne or UK ton.
- Enter the depth of the layer in inches, centimetres, millimetres or feet.
- Read the area in square yards, square feet and square metres. Use the second tab to go the other way and find the tons to order for a given area.
Worked examples
Typical bulk densities
| Material | lb per cubic yard | US tons per cubic yard |
|---|---|---|
| Gravel or crushed stone | about 2,800 | about 1.4 |
| Sand | about 2,700 | about 1.35 |
| Topsoil | about 2,200 | about 1.1 |
| Wood mulch | about 800 | about 0.4 |
| Compacted asphalt | about 3,915 | about 1.96 |
| Concrete | about 4,050 | about 2.03 |
These are typical figures. Moisture, grading and compaction change the real weight, sometimes by 10 to 20 percent. Ask your supplier for the density of the exact product and add a small allowance for waste.
Frequently asked questions
How many square yards does a ton of gravel cover?
At 2,800 lb per cubic yard, one US ton covers about 8.6 square yards at 3 inches deep and about 12.9 square yards at 2 inches deep. Use the table above for other depths.
Why does the answer change with depth?
The same weight makes the same volume. Spread thinner, that volume covers more area, so coverage is inversely proportional to depth.
What is the difference between a US ton, a metric tonne and a UK ton?
A US (short) ton is 2,000 lb or 907.18 kg. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg. A UK (long) ton is 2,240 lb or 1,016.05 kg. Pick the one your supplier uses.
Is this accurate enough to order material?
It gives a good estimate. Compaction, moisture and uneven ground change real quantities, so ask your supplier and add a small allowance.
Can I use it for asphalt?
Yes. Choose compacted asphalt. Paving contractors often use 110 lb per square yard for each inch of thickness, which is close to the 108.75 lb this tool gets from 145 lb per cubic foot.
