How to take the Hindi typing test
- Choose your keyboard. Kruti Dev (Remington) and Inscript work on a normal English keyboard: keep your computer on English and the test turns each key into Hindi. Choose My Hindi keyboard if your computer or phone already types Hindi, for example with a Remington GAIL, Inscript or phonetic keyboard.
- Pick the test length and the text. Easy words are good for learning the keys; paragraphs are closer to an exam passage.
- Click the box below the passage and start typing. The timer starts with your first key. Press the space bar after each word.
- Finished words turn green when they are right and red when they are wrong. When the time is up you see your net speed, accuracy and a list of the words you typed wrong.

Kruti Dev, Mangal, Remington and Inscript: which one to choose
Hindi typing depends on the font the text is stored in and the keyboard layout your fingers learn.
| Option | What it is | Choose it if |
|---|---|---|
| Kruti Dev (Remington) | An older Hindi font that uses the Remington typewriter key positions. Text is typed with English keys and only looks like Hindi in that font. | Your exam or office still uses Kruti Dev or DevLys, or you learned on a typewriter. |
| Mangal with Remington GAIL | Unicode Hindi (the Mangal font) typed with a keyboard that follows the Remington positions, with some differences from Kruti Dev. | Your exam asks for Mangal and Remington. Install a Remington GAIL keyboard on your computer and use My Hindi keyboard mode. |
| Mangal with Inscript | The standard Unicode Hindi keyboard built into Windows, Mac, Linux and phones. Vowel signs are typed after the letter, in the order you speak. | Your exam asks for Inscript, or you want a layout that needs no extra software. |
In Kruti Dev mode, type the short i sign (ि, key f) before the letter and the reph (र्, key Z) after the letter, just as on a typewriter. For example, fgUnh gives हिन्दी and /keZ gives धर्म. Alt codes such as Alt+0216 for क्र also work. In Inscript mode, type in sound order: क + ि gives कि.
How Hindi typing speed is calculated
Typing tests count one "word" as 5 key depressions. Spaces count, while Backspace and Shift do not.
Net speed (WPM) = Gross speed − (wrong words ÷ minutes)
Accuracy = correct words ÷ words typed × 100
In Kruti Dev and Inscript modes the test counts the actual keys behind your final text. In My Hindi keyboard mode it cannot see your keys, so it counts the Hindi characters you typed. A word is wrong if any letter, sign or matra in it differs from the passage, so हिंदी and हिन्दी count as different words. If you stop before the time is up, the result uses the time you actually took.
Hindi typing speed needed for government exams
Each exam sets its own rules, so always check the latest notification. A few common examples:
- SSC CHSL (LDC/JSA) and similar SSC posts: 30 words per minute in Hindi, in a 10-minute test. SSC treats 30 WPM as about 9,000 key depressions per hour, at 5 key depressions per word.
- Railway typing skill tests: recent notices say Kruti Dev and Mangal (Inscript, Remington GAIL or Remington CBI) are made available for Hindi.
- State exams such as CPCT and court clerk tests: the speed, test time, font and whether Backspace is allowed vary. Use the 10- or 15-minute test and turn off Allow Backspace if your exam does not allow it.
| Net WPM (Hindi) | Level |
|---|---|
| Below 15 | Beginner: still learning the keys |
| 15–24 | Average |
| 25–34 | Good: around many exam cut-offs |
| 35–44 | Fast |
| 45 and above | Expert |
These bands are a rough guide for Hindi, which usually runs slower than English typing because of matras and half letters.
Tips to type Hindi faster
- Learn one layout and stick to it. Switching between Kruti Dev and Inscript slows you down for weeks.
- Get the words right before you push for speed. One wrong matra makes the whole word wrong, so slow down until most words turn green.
- Practise half letters and conjuncts. Words with क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, श्र, द्य and र् cost the most time. Practise them separately.
- Practise the real test length. If your exam is 10 minutes, take the 10-minute test a few times a week to build stamina.
- Do not look at the keyboard. Use Show key layout on the screen instead until you know the keys.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to install Kruti Dev or Mangal font for this test?
No. In Kruti Dev and Inscript modes the test converts your English keys to Hindi on the page. Keep your computer keyboard on English. You only need a Hindi keyboard installed if you choose My Hindi keyboard mode.
Why do I see English letters or the wrong Hindi letters?
The keyboard mode does not match your computer. If your computer types English, use Kruti Dev or Inscript mode. If it already types Hindi, use My Hindi keyboard mode. Also check that Caps Lock is off.
Is Kruti Dev the same as Remington GAIL?
They are close but not the same. Both follow the old Remington typewriter positions, but Remington GAIL types Unicode (Mangal) text and moves a few keys and signs. If your exam uses Mangal with Remington GAIL, practise in My Hindi keyboard mode with a Remington GAIL keyboard installed.
What is a good Hindi typing speed?
Around 25 to 35 net WPM is good for most clerk-level exams. SSC CHSL, for example, asks for 30 WPM in Hindi.
Can I take the Hindi typing test on my phone?
Yes. Choose My Hindi keyboard and switch your phone keyboard to Hindi. Phone speeds are not comparable with exam speeds on a computer keyboard.
Is my typing saved?
No. The test runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere. Only your best score and keyboard choice are kept in your own browser.
All Hindi passages in this test are original practice texts written for ToolsRiver.
