How RD interest is calculated
Banks and the post office compound RD interest every quarter. Each monthly instalment earns interest from the month it is paid until maturity, so the first instalment earns the most and the last one the least. The maturity value is:
Maturity = P × [(1+i)1/3 + (1+i)2/3 + … + (1+i)N/3]
P = monthly deposit, i = yearly rate ÷ 4 (quarterly rate), N = number of months.
Example: ₹5,000 a month for 5 years at 7% grows to ₹3,59,664. You deposit ₹3,00,000 and earn ₹59,664 as interest.
| Monthly deposit at 7% | Deposited | Interest | Maturity |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹1,000 for 1 year | ₹12,000 | ₹462 | ₹12,462 |
| ₹2,000 for 3 years | ₹72,000 | ₹8,275 | ₹80,275 |
| ₹5,000 for 5 years | ₹3,00,000 | ₹59,664 | ₹3,59,664 |
| ₹10,000 for 10 years | ₹12,00,000 | ₹5,37,017 | ₹17,37,017 |
Post Office RD calculator
The Post Office Recurring Deposit runs for 5 years (60 monthly deposits) and pays 6.7% a year, compounded quarterly, for accounts opened from 1 October to 31 December 2026. The government reviews the rate every quarter; the rate on the day you open the account stays the same for the whole 5 years. The minimum deposit is ₹100 a month.
| Post Office RD (6.7%, 5 years) | Deposited | Maturity |
|---|---|---|
| ₹100 a month | ₹6,000 | ₹7,137 |
| ₹1,000 a month | ₹60,000 | ₹71,366 |
| ₹5,000 a month | ₹3,00,000 | ₹3,56,829 |
RD or FD: which is better?
- Use an RD when you save from your monthly income. It builds the habit and you do not need a lump sum.
- Use an FD when you already have the money. The full amount earns interest from day one, so an FD earns more than an RD of the same total at the same rate. Check it with the FD Calculator.
- Both are taxed the same way: the interest is added to your income every year.
Tax and TDS on RD interest
RD interest is taxable at your slab rate. Banks add RD interest to your FD interest when they check the TDS limit: TDS of 10% is deducted when interest from all your deposits in that bank crosses ₹50,000 in a financial year (₹1,00,000 for senior citizens). If your income is below the taxable limit, you can submit Form 121 to the bank to avoid TDS.
Frequently asked questions
How much will I get if I deposit ₹5,000 a month in an RD for 5 years?
About ₹3,59,664 at 7%, and about ₹3,56,829 in the Post Office RD at 6.7%. You deposit ₹3,00,000 in both cases; the rest is interest.
Can I use this as an SBI RD calculator?
Yes. Enter SBI's current RD rate for your period and tick Senior citizen if it applies. Banks follow the same quarterly compounding, so the result will be very close to the bank's figure.
Is the RD interest rate fixed?
Yes. The rate on the day you open the RD applies to every instalment until maturity, even if the bank or the government changes rates later.
What happens if I miss an RD instalment?
Most banks and the post office charge a small penalty for each late month, and repeated misses can close the account early. The maturity value also drops because that instalment earns less interest. Ask your bank for its exact rule.
How much should I save every month to reach a goal?
Switch to Find monthly deposit for a goal. For example, to collect ₹5 lakh in 3 years at 7%, you need to deposit about ₹12,458 a month.

About this tool. RD Calculator uses the quarterly-compounding formula that banks and India Post use for recurring deposits. The Post Office RD rate (6.7% for October–December 2026) and the TDS limits were checked in November 2026. We tested it against hand-worked examples, goal amounts, 6 to 120 months, senior citizen rates and wrong inputs. Your bank's figure can differ by a few rupees because of rounding.
