How to add page numbers to a PDF

    1. Choose or drop the PDF.
    2. Choose the position (bottom or top; left, centre or right) and the format.
    3. Set the start number and the page to begin on, for example begin on page 2 to skip the cover.
    4. Click Add page numbers and download.

    Examples

    • Skip the cover page: begin on page 2 with start number 1, so the second page shows 1.
    • Continue from another file: set the start number to 25 if this document follows a 24-page part.
    • Page X of Y: the total counts only the numbered pages.

Numbers are added in a small grey font about 1 cm from the page edge, so they do not cover your content.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I add page numbers to a PDF?

Add the PDF, choose the position and format, and click Add page numbers.

Can I start numbering from page 2?

Yes. Set “Begin on page” to 2. Pages before it are left without a number.

Can I add “Page 1 of 10” style numbers?

Yes. Choose the “Page 1 of 10” or “1 of 10” format.

Will page numbers cover my text?

They are placed close to the edge in a small font. If your page has content right at the edge, try the other position.

Are my files uploaded to your server?

No. The PDF is opened and processed by JavaScript in your own browser, so the file never leaves your device. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page has loaded.

Is this tool free? Do I need to sign up?

Yes, it is completely free and there is no sign-up or watermark. There is no daily limit; very large files are limited only by your device’s memory.

    Can I use a password-protected PDF?

No. Remove the password first (open the PDF with its password and save or print it as a new PDF), then use the tool.
