How to take the typing test

  1. Choose the test length and the kind of text. Easy words are good for warming up; paragraphs are closest to real typing; numbers and punctuation are the hardest.
  2. Click in the box and start typing. The timer starts with your first key press.
  3. Green letters are correct and red letters are mistakes. You can go back with Backspace and fix them.
  4. When the time is up, you see your net WPM, accuracy, gross speed and the mistakes you left uncorrected. Press Restart or New text to try again.

How WPM and accuracy are calculated

Typing tests count a “word” as 5 characters, including spaces, so long and short words are treated fairly.

Gross WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Net WPM = Gross WPM − (uncorrected mistakes ÷ minutes)
Accuracy = correct characters ÷ characters typed × 100

Net WPM is the main score because it rewards both speed and accuracy. A mistake you go back and correct costs you time but does not reduce net WPM. If you stop before the time is up, the result uses the time you actually took.

What is a good typing speed?

Net WPMLevelWhat it means
Below 25BeginnerYou are probably still looking at the keyboard. Practise the home row (ASDF JKL;).
25–39AverageComfortable for everyday emails and chats.
40–59GoodFast enough for most office and data-entry work.
60–79FastTypical of people who touch-type every day.
80 and aboveExpertProfessional typist speed.

These bands are a rough guide. Government typing tests and job tests set their own speed, accuracy and time rules, so check the notification for the exam you are preparing for and practise with the same test length.

Tips to improve your typing speed

  • Learn touch typing. Keep your fingers on the home row and use all ten fingers, so you never need to look down.
  • Accuracy first. Slow down until you make almost no mistakes, then build speed. Fixing errors costs more time than typing carefully.
  • Practise little and often. Ten minutes a day works better than one long session a week. Use the 1-minute test for sprints and the 5- or 10-minute test for stamina.
  • Read ahead. Look at the next word while you finish the current one.
  • Sit well. Keep your wrists straight and the screen at eye level to avoid strain.

Frequently asked questions

What is WPM in a typing test?

WPM means words per minute. Every 5 characters you type, including spaces, count as one word. If you type 200 characters in one minute, that is 40 WPM.

What is the average typing speed?

Most people who type regularly score about 35 to 45 WPM. Touch typists who type every day are often above 60 WPM.

What is the difference between gross WPM and net WPM?

Gross WPM counts everything you typed. Net WPM subtracts the mistakes you did not correct. Net WPM is the fairer score and is what most tests report.

Which test length should I use?

Use 1 minute to check your top speed, and 5 or 10 minutes to measure the speed you can keep up, which is what most job and exam typing tests look at.

Can I take this typing test on a phone?

Yes. It works with on-screen keyboards, but phone typing speeds are not comparable with a physical keyboard. Turn off autocorrect for a fair score.

Is my typing data saved?

No. The test runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere. Only your best score is kept in your own browser so you can try to beat it.
